Becoming A Professional Driver (LGV/PSV)

Applying for a Provisional Entitlement

Assuming you already hold a driving licence, which enables you to drive a car (B Category),  a D2 (Application Form) and D4 (Medical Report Form) must be completed. The D4 form must be completed together with a registered medical practitioner, e.g. local GP or private doctor, which you may be charged for.

Once both forms are completed, they must be sent to DVLA (DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1BR), together with your driving licence and counterpart. In approximately 3/4 weeks, you should receive your driving licence back, with your provisional categories.

Theory Tests

There are 2 parts which make up the theory test:

  • Multiple Choice

  • Hazard Perception

Both need to be passed, to enable you to continue on your journey to becoming a Profession HGV/PSV Driver. Each must be passed within 2 years of each other.

Once you have passed both tests, you will be sent a test certificate, which is valid for 2 years. You will need your theory test number for when you book your practical test.

Practical Driving Test

Your practical test will last up to 90 minutes and will consist of vehicle safety questions, practical road driving and off-road exercises.

Initial Driver CPC Qualification

Once you have passed your practical test, you must complete your initial CPC qualification which consists of the remaining 2 parts, as follows:

  • Module 2: Case Study Test – 7 studies based on real life scenarios within the transport industry, this is a computer based exercise.

  • Module 4: Practical Demonstration Test – You will need to show your knowledge and understanding of a large goods vehicle, in particular, keeping safe and your load secure.
